Clinton, Mo., Officer Gary Michael was shot dead while tackling a vehicle registration violation. While the officer was trying to stop a vehicle at the Green Street, near Henry County Sheriff’s office, he was shot at by the driver of the vehicle. The bullet directly hit the officer, knocking him down.
While reports suggest that the officer returned the fire, it is not yet known, if the suspect was hit or not as he fled the scene in his car. Later, the vehicle in which the suspect had fled from the scene was found abandoned
In the meantime, the manhunt to track down the suspect is underway and every effort is being made to locate him and arrest him. Authorities have said that they suspect Ian McCarthy, 39, from Clinton, Mo., to be behind the shooting of the officer. He is apparently armed and so is said to be dangerous.
Sgt. Bill Lowe, who is with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says, “We searched the house we believed the person we were looking for might have been in…He was not in that house…We have every reason to believe he is still in Clinton”. He went on to add, “We don’t have any information indicating he’s out of the area. Having said that, it does not mean it is not the case. We are diligent in thinking he’s somewhere in the area still.”

While giving details about the incident, Lowe was quoted by the CBSNews as saying that the driver of a Dodge Nitro got out of the vehicle during the traffic stop and started shooting. He says the 37-year-old Michael returned fire but that the suspect got back into the car and drove off before crashing two blocks away. The officer told the media that tactical teams cordoned off the area around the crash and were searching for a person of interest.
