Farooq Abdullah wins Srinagar Lok Sabha bypoll – Election results and Twitter reactions

ViewsHeadlines Desk,

Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir National Conference President and former Chief Minister of Kashmir Dr Farooq Abdullah has won the Srinagar Lok Sabha by election. This will end his political wilderness of the last three years.

Dr Abdullah had faced first electoral loss of his political life when he lost the election in 2014 General Election. With the win he not just gets back to Parliament, but also proves the way Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP is increasingly becoming marginalized in state politics.

Nonetheless his win was marred by very low turnout in the election. Srinagar Lok Sabha bypoll may be described with the lowest turnout of electorate and highest amount of violence. At least eight people lost their lives and many more injured.

Farooq Abdullah got 30333 votes or 57 percent of the total votes polled, while his nearest rival, PDP’s Nazir Ahmad Khan polled merely 20221 votes. The number of total electorate in the constituency is more than 12 lakh voters and only 7 percent people had voted.
