Darlene Cates, who despite being overweight, not just had a flourishing acting career, but also got critical acclaim for her acting is dead. She passed away in her sleep. She was 69.
While her acting career saw her become part of numerous movies, the one film that she treasured the most and for which she got received critical acclaim was What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. She played the role of mother of Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio in the film. For common people, she was an obese, yet skilful mother who many fell in love as the mother.
Her daughter, while announcing her mother’s death said that her mother died in her sleep Sunday morning at her home in Forney, Texas.
A report in the Syracuse while talking about her says, “Cates was cast in the film as the morbidly obese mother of Johnny Depp, in the title role, and his younger brother, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. She had been spotted by the film’s screenwriter, Peter Hedges, while appearing on the “Sally Jessy Raphael” talk show, where she discussed her struggles with her weight.
Cates was born in Borger, Texas, to Truman Madison Guthrie. She grew up in Dumas. Reports suggest
that her parent’s divorce at early age, when she was all of 12-years, made her take solace in food and more food. At one time, she weighed 408 lb (29 st 2 lb or 185 kg) and went for weight loss surgery. Though she lost 99 lb (7 st 1 lb or 45 kg) but eventually gained further and weighed as much as 249 kg.
The actress married Robert Cates in the year 1963. They had a daughter Sheri Ann in the year 1966, and two sons, Mark and Chris.
