Mumbai: BMC elections 2017 are merely four days away from now and everyone is wondering as to how All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen or AIMIM will perform in Mumbai. The Hyderabad based outfit is running a round-the-clock campaign and its star campaigners are none other than Asaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi. Both of them are called Qaid-e-Millat and naqib-e-Millat respectively.

Whether no one knows as to why the two brothers have taken the grand titles and as to who awarded them these titles, what is known is that the two brothers have created apprehensions in Congress camp in Mumbai. Congress is not the only party that is feeling the pinch. The other party that may be wiped out of the BMC, if the rush in their rallies transforms into vote, is Samajwadi Party.

Nonetheless there are people who believe that people only come to the venue to have good time. Obviously the entertainment quotient is very high there.

The heavily Hyderabad accented speeches of the Owaisi brothers are a hit with people here. But people’s issues here in Mumbai are very different than issues in Hyderabad.

Some political analysts give the example of Bangalore where the party contested Bangalore Municipal Corporation elections last year but drew a big zero despite attracting decent crowds everywhere. It couldn’t do anything more than eating into a few Congress seats, but couldn’t stop the Congress from coming to power.

In the meantime, reports suggest that Akbaruddin Owaisi’s meetings are attracting large crowds. The junior Owaisi who was recently booked for hate speech, his rallies are reportedly attracting more crowds than that of even Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis or Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

A report talking about a typical Akbaruddin Owaisi speech has this to say, “In most of his speech, the AIMIM legislator typically begins by attacking the Congress-NCP and then ends his talk by targeting the BJP and Shiv Sena. Sometimes the AIMIM leader also touches controversial issues including that of Babri Masjid…But looking at the number of crowd listening to him in his rallies, it looks like he is hitting the mark most of the time, especially when he addresses rallies among the youth. In last few weeks, Akbaruddin Owaisi has conducted almost 4-5 public rallies in Mumbai, most of them were in Muslim-dominated pockets of Mumbai”.

Muslim majority areas coming under BMC including Mumbadevi, Nagpada, Madanpura, Bandra East, Govandi other areas are the main areas where the party is putting its resources. The party is contesting from 56 wards.

While some people are claiming that the party may win around three dozen seats, people who known the pulse on the ground-level believe that the party may not win more than a couple of seats in the BMC.
