New Delhi: Has the BJP abandoned its anti-Muslim stance? While in the most populated state of UP, the BJP hadn’t put up a single Muslim candidate in the assembly election, the BJP’s first list for MCD election 2017 includes 4 Muslim names.
The saffron party had consciously tried to project its pro-Hindutva stance in the UP election, the party seems to have a different poll strategy in place in an election where polls are not as important as in the numerically biggest state.
The BJP was among the last parties to announce its candidates for the three corporations that come under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Yesterday, the party announced its first list of candidates for MCD polls 2017. Monday is the last day to file the nomination for the corporation elections in Delhi.
While there were many surprises in the BJP list, the biggest surprise was apparently the presence of four Muslim candidates.
The Muslim candidates up by the saffron party include Kuwar Rafi from Zakir Nagar (SDMC), Sartaj Ahmed from Chauhan Banger, Sabra Malik from Mustafabad (EDMC) and Famudin Safi from Delhi Gate (NDMC).
The BJP is fighting election in MCD as if it was an election of national importance. From poll strategy down to candidates selection in each ward has been supervised by none other than the party president Amit Shah.
Meanwhile the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the ruling party in Delhi is putting up a stiff challenge before the BJP. The Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the relief of low tariffs for water and electricity will be extended to tenants as well. The announcement, intended to woo voters, comes after the AAP’s plan to abolish residential house tax. Kejriwal, who is eyeing upcoming MCD polls, said that tenants, who are currently not getting the benefits of low tariffs, will be getting those benefits after the civic elections.
