Chennai: India’s top racer Ashwin Sundar is no more. The champion racer apparently lost control of his BMW while driving the car in Chennai. The car hit a tree causing the vehicle to go up in flame.
Hindustan Times report says that the racer and his wife who was travelling with her husband were charred to death beyond recognition.
A video doing the rounds on social media and search engines showed how fast the fire spread and that there was no chance of saving the two from the inferno. The two were taken to a local hospital in Chennai, where they were pronounced brought dead.
The 31-year old racer was accompanied by his wife Niveditha who is a physician working in a hospital in Chennai itself. Apparently in such accidents, there is very remote chance of survival as doors get jammed and the occupants are not able to come out of the vehicle.
An NDTV report said that fire-fighters received the distress call at 1:51 am and a team was rushed to the scene but it was too late to save the couple. “When we arrived, the fire was on and we did not know the couple was inside. We extinguished the fire in 16 minutes and found them both trapped. The lady’s legs were seen trapped. The driver’s side of the car was also mangled perhaps making it difficult for Ashwin to move,” a fire department official was quoted by the NDTV as saying.
