New Delhi: At a time when anti-Romeo squads in UP are being criticized, a website catering to New Delhi’s Jamia Nagar’s largely Muslim population has claimed that Muslims in Jamia Nagar want anti-Romeo squad to man the streets.
The BJP government has activated anti-Romeo squad to take on the youths who trouble young girls outside colleges and other places. While the issue is being criticized for being anti-Democratic, as many such squads are troubling couples seen together in markets and other public places.
Many a times, married couple and others are targeted by such squads who don’t leave any stone unturned in illegally shaming both men and women in such cases. Nonetheless, the BJP government in the state has said that it has organized the anti-Romeo squad as the menace of eve-teasing had become very common.
Some people have claimed that the anti-Romeo squads, instead of fighting the eve-teasing menace, may give free hand to target innocent youths. Police already have disproportionate power to deal with such issues but the new role will give it complete freedom in targeting youths from poor backgrounds.
Nonetheless, a local news website based in largely Muslim locality of Jamia Nagar, in a story claimed that people of the area are demanding deployment of such squads in Muslim localities of Abul Fazl Enclave, Shaheen Bagh, Batla House and Zakir Nagar. OkhlaTimes report says that people, especially the young girls living in locality for education purpose, feel harassed by eve-teasers.
The report claims that the menace of teasing –non-existent in the area till a couple of years ago – has become rather serious. Quoting a mother of a grown up daughter, the report says, “Okhla is a safe area for women as crime against them is low. But what is disturbing that a few youths are spoiling that safe environment. It is common to see youths in group standing on streets and staring at girls, women and even passing remarks. Though markets, malls, schools, colleges and coaching centres are the worst place, even streets are not safe. Effort should be made to nip such things in the bud,” said stay-at-home mother Nighat Ara”.
Quoting another resident, the report said, “A Jamia Nagar resident Arshad Ali Khan wrote in an email to OT.COM: “The whole area is becoming a nightmare. I just want to add that even school going girls are teased near Ashoka Park and by default all the guys are from Zakir Nagar. They are always on their bikes and are recognizable”.
So while there are murmurs of dissent against anti-Romeo squads in UP by the newly installed BJP government, led by Yogi Asityanath, residents of a Muslim locality in New Delhi are praying for one such squad in their locality. They claim that the menace of eve-teasing can be taken care by strong-arm tactics by the law-enforcement agencies.
