While giraffes give birth to calf on a daily basis across the globe and even in thousands of zoos almost in every part of the world, a seemingly normal thing was turned into extra ordinary by the management of Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y. a promotional gimmick by the zoo management gave a star like status to a very ordinary giraffe that gave birth to a calf Saturday.
The live feed that the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y management launched several months ago of a pregnant giraffe attracted more than a million people as it gave birth to a calf. The entire episode was live streamed by the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y. the interest in the animal has been steadily climbing up as the delivery date of April the giraffe nears.
Many people were thrilled by the spectacle of the baby calf plopping out of its mom around 9:50 a.m. ET. It wiggled on the ground before sitting up. Within an hour of birth, the calf was standing.
Reports suggest that Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y owner, Jordan Patch said that his staff noticed the 15-year-old reticulated giraffe was in labor about 7:30 a.m. The zoo went live on Facebook about 8 a.m., announcing the development. By that time, two of the calf’s hooves were seen sticking out.
The owner of the zoo who has been successfully using the pregnancy of the giraffe as a marketing gimmick said, “We’re going to let Mom and baby do their thing for a little bit”. The gender of the baby giraffe was unclear, as park employees did not interrupt the mother and baby in the stall. The zoo said it would provide an update later.
At the time of the birth, about 1.2 million people watched live on YouTube and nearly 750,000 watched from the zoo’s Facebook page. The livestream will remain up for the next five days, Patch said. From there, the zoo will find another way to keep people updated on the calf’s development.
