Analysts, well before the beginning of Wimbledon 2017, were unanimous that Andy Murray will be simply unbeatable in the tourney if he is hundred percent fit. After his fourth round victory over Fabio Fognini, he has proved to the world that he is simply unstoppable, whoever be the opponent, and however tough is the fight.
That said, the match was rather very tough and vacillated between the two players till Andy Murray hit the winning shot. The hard fought victory for Murray that came following 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 fight might have badly enervated the defending champion.
Murray is the top contender to win back the title. But he needed two long hours and 39 minutes on Friday to dispatch the tournament’s 29th seed in front of 15,000 spectators at Centre Court of the All England Club, Efe news reported.
The beginning of the match didn’t give any indication as to what was in store in the latter part of the fight. The 30-year old who bested the Briton in May at the Italian Open, looked unimpressive in the first set but recovered to win the second and make it a contest.
Despite an ankle injury he didn’t give up. The Italian player who is also the current Italian No. 1 achieved his top most ranking in March 2014 when he he was ranked No. 13. Fognini’s most successful surface is red clay, upon which he won his four ATP singles titles in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Viña del Mar and Umag, reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 French Open and the semifinals of the 2013 Monte-Carlo Masters. Together with Simone Bolelli, Fognini won the 2015 Australian Open doubles event, becoming the first all Italian men’s pair to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era.
After losing such a hard fought match, the Italian player said, “The end of the match was tense. It was an up and down match. I didn’t feel like it was the best tennis at times but I managed to get through”.
Murray while talking to the media said, “I didn’t feel I moved as well as the first couple of matches but I’ve got a couple of days break now and can work on that and hopefully get myself in a good rhythm and play some good tennis on Monday”.
