Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Jim Comey has been fired by President Donald Trump. The sudden departure of the FBI director has shocked the entire nation, with many people claiming that the removal will hamper investigation into allegations of Russian interference in US presidential elections.
The investigations are going to have far reaching impact not just on the policy making in the US, but also over President Donald Trump’s future. In the last more than forty years, a FBI director has been sacked while he was heading investigations into a high profile case.
Now White House has announced that FBI Deputy Director Andrew “Andy” McCabe will serve as the acting director of the FBI.
In a memo issued by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, he said “By operation of law and effective immediately, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe assumed the position of Acting Director of the FBI…As you well know, the FBI is an exceptional law enforcement and intelligence agency. It is made so by you, the devoted men and women who work tirelessly to keep our coutnry safe. Thank your for your steadfast dedication and commitment during this time of transition.”
A few media reports suggest that his elevation as the new FBI chief may be just a stop gap arrangement and not a permanent posting. Andrew McCabe became the assistant special agent in charge of the Washington field office’s counterterrorism division in 2008 and was the first director of the High-Value Interrogation Group in 2009, a team set up by President Obama. It is said that during his time in the FBI’s New York Office, McCabe helped build cases against Russian mobsters. He was known as a “methodical investigator who assiduously worked to earn the trust of victims, and particularly, informants and witnesses”.
A CBSNews report says some issues will make his elevation to be post rather very short-lived. “His name surfaced over the summer during the investigation because his wife, Jill McCabe, received $500,000 in campaign donations in 2015 from Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a close ally to the Clintons. There have been questions swirling around why Andrew McCabe didn’t recuse himself from the email investigation” says the report.
Jill’s website while introducing her says, “Jill is a pediatrician, not a career politician”. “As a doctor and medical administrator, she has devoted her time and energy to improving the lives of all those under her care. In the hospital, Jill solves problems by listening to patients, analyzing data, and weighing the risks and benefits of every potential solution. Rather than shy away from challenging situations, Jill makes difficult decisions every day in order to advance the interests of the patients and families who place their trust in her. As our state senator, she will continue to devote herself to ensuring that your interests come first.”
