After sounding defiant till the other day, the embattled Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has resigned over his raging sex scandal. While he has maintained that his relationship with Rebeka Mason was limited to talk and nothing else, the impeachment proceedings have forced him to resign.
Till now, except a few solitary voice recordings, no incriminating proof has emerged regarding his ‘physical’ relations with Ms mason who is married with three children.
It must be kept in mind that he and his wife of fifty years separated following revelation about his raging affair with the woman in his forties.
In the meantime the fall from grace seems to be rather swift for the 74-year old George Bentley. He was booked into a Montgomery County Jail Monday on charges of failing to file a major contribution report and knowingly converting campaign contributions to personal use, according to booking information on the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office website.
Reports suggest that when enquired as to whether he was guilty at the Montgomery County Courthouse, Bentley responded, “Yes, sir.”
A report in Vox, while talking about his affair with Rebekah Mason says, “…beginning during Bentley’s second term, an affair with a key staffer, Rebekah Mason, and the collapse of his marriage led to a steady drip-drip-drip of embarrassing revelations culminating in his likely resignation. And Bentley’s refusal to take one for the team and simply step down created a mounting series of journalistic and legal inquiries that brought more details to light”. Now reports suggest that the Governor has reportedly signed a plea deal that requires him to reimburse the nearly $9,000 his campaign spent on the legal fees of former aide Rebekah Mason, with whom he is accused of having an affair. Besides, he has been ordered to deposit all the money in his campaign account to the state. This money is more than $36,000.
In the meantime, his alleged flame, Rebekah Mason is not just married, she is mother of three children. Coming from Tuscaloosa, she served as press secretary for Bentley’s campaign in 2010. “Wife, Mom of 3. Fan of Football. Business Owner. Senior Advisor for a great Gov. Love Family, Jesus and Reese’s Cups. Not necessarily in that order.” Mason’s Twitter page said sometimes ago.
A report in the Al.com says that Ms Mason was a contestant in beauty pageants too. In 1990, she competed in the Miss Alabama Pageant. Mason then graduated from the University of Alabama in 1993 with a degree in broadcast communications. From there, she went on to work for several news stations in the state, eventually becoming anchor at Tuscaloosa’s WVUA and WDBB. She is married to former Alabama weatherman Jon Mason who teaches Sunday School at the First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa, where Governor Bentley is a practicing deacon. Another Al.com report says that the couple own an ad agency in Tuscaloosa named Caldwell Mason Marketing.
