It must be among the steepest falls from the grace. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has seen many challenges in his long life of 74 years, but not the one that has followed his infamous affair with Rebekah Caldwell Mason, his key aide who has been functioning as his spokesperson for several years now.
When he entered his second inning as the governor of Alabama following his massive win in his reelection bid, no one had slightest idea that the governor with a very clean image will be so unceremoniously removed from his job, imposed fine and will have to spend a couple of hours in prison. His mugshot, like mugshot of any other criminal was doing the rounds in the internet.
Now he must be feeling the loneliest person in the world. The Gov. (now ex) lost his wife of five decades Dianne Bentley when she filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences in 2015 and got it the same year. His children, four sons, have too distanced themselves from him following the dirty linen being washed in the open.
The affair that the Governor only called all ‘talk’ and nothing else could have remained under wraps had he not inadvertently sent the messages meant for Rebekah to his wife. The love emojis started landing in his wife’s mobile as he stopped holding her hands in public. This looked rather very strange and she realized that something fishy was underway.
Meanwhile everything became very clear to his wife and children when he mistakenly sent a text to his wife, Dianne Bentley, reading, “I love you Rebekah”. It is needless to say that the message was accompanied with an emoji of a red rose. His lack of technical knowhow is a common knowledge. This is the reason that his text exchanges, made with a state-provided iPhone, also appeared on a state-provided iPad he’d given to his wife as a gift.
Instead of remaining defiant as he had sounded till this past Saturday, the Governor developed cold feet and gave in before the Alabama House of Representatives was to vote on articles of impeachment. He resigned as part of a plea deal that also included pleading guilty to two misdemeanors, a suspended sentence, and community service. Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey will assume Bentley’s office. He will never be able to run for any office.
While Robert Bentley might not be tech savvy and thus sent messages meant for his mistress to his wife, Mrs Bentley was not as tech laggard. The tape that finally exposed him before the entire world was actually made by Bentley’s wife, and makes the existence of an affair perfectly clear. “When I stand behind you, and I put my arms around you…and I put my hands on your breasts, and I put my hands (unintelligible) and just pull you real close. I love that, too” the Governor can be heard saying in the tape.
